This special piece depicts one of our favorite works by Astrid Terrazas: “the thorn will lick its own wounds! these voices hurt!”

"This piece deals with the continuous cycle of hard-work, failure, and success. The woman holds a thriving plant, but in order to bloom it had to pierce her skin. Opposite her is a snake with a mask in its stomach--ojo,ojo,nariz,boca--it’s a depiction of feeling like an impostor, unable to trust my success. A rock wrapped in braids sinks to the bottom, constrained and static, however the top of the painting shows a mosquito’s stages of development--always transforming and growing. Underneath her lies a terracotta angel. I got it with my grandma in El Paso when I was six. It’s my most important possession, a good luck charm." Astrid Terrazas.
